popil & dezio strike again ::
:: I was just chatting with Popil on MSN and she was kind enough to send through a few of her latest graffiti pieces.
The first photo below was done in Shanghai on Moganshan Rd. The middle photo was done on Gulangyu Island (just off the coast of Xiamen city); a simple slapdash throw-up of Popil’s signature cat tag. The last photo shows Dezio doing a piece on the beach, also on Gulangyu Island. // AjS

I totally get spray painting a building but a rock on the beach? That truly sucks!

I’m with Chuckles. One thing I really like about China is that there is not the ubiquitous graffiti found in N America and Europe. Responsible graffiti is cool and I appreciate the art. But I really object to vandalizing the coastline. That’s not art. It’s just plain selfish. Posting such photos only promotes such behavior.

@ ShanghaiSteve & Chuckles P Washington, thanks for your responses. Coastline / beach graffiti usually doesn’t last very long because of the elements (sun / humidity / wind / rain, etc.), so, in a way, it just might very well be the “most responsible” kind of graffiti. Although, to me, I’m not so sure graffiti is at all about being responsible. To me, it’s about being (publicly) self-expressive with a dash of destructiveness – in the context of a healthy graffiti culture, everything else should probably take a back seat to these things. And also, there are people in the world that look upon beaches and coastlines the same way you look upon the places you feel graffiti should be done “responsible” – pretty subjective stuff all around. Either way, appreciate you weighing in. It’s a fair point of view.
