trax | sean lynch, 88 tracks to take ::
:: I met Sean Lynch at a bar in Detroit in early 2002. He was alone, so was I. We drank a few beers together, chatted about music, and had an odd encounter with a complete stranger who insisted he knew both of us. That’s about all I remember.
When I got up to leave Sean casually handed me a CD.
“Here is my album, have a listen. If you like it, pass it on to someone else. If not, pass it on to someone anyway.”
At the time I thought nothing of it and his album ended up sitting untouched for a long time in my apartment (in Ann Arbor, I was a student at the University of Michigan) until I finally got around to giving it a listen.
Listening to 88 Tracks to Take for the first time put me on hold. I literally dropped everything I was doing and just listened. It was incredible music and I was blown away. I listened to it from start to finish several times that day. I recall making copies for friends because they just had to hear hear it.
To this day I still listen to the album regularly. It’s timeless to me and on some level sentimental because it ended up defining a year of my life…you know, the way certain albums can do that for whatever random reasons beyond just being amazingly good.
I only met Sean once and didn’t got any of his contact information; in fact, I didn’t got any information about him at all. I went back to that bar several times hoping to run into him again. No luck.
I frequently scanned the music section of Detroit’s Metro Times to see if he was was scheduled to play live anywhere. Nothing.
I asked around among my local-music-savvy friends in Detroit. No one had heard of him.
When one of his tracks plays in rotation on my stereo, I always do a quick hoping to track down a Web site or a blog post or maybe a newly released album…anything. Nothing substantial ever turns up.
Well, this post is my contribution to those search results and my way of “passing it on to someone else.” I’ve shared the full album below. If there is anyone who knows anything about Sean, his music, etc., please share in the comments section or drop me an email at 56minus1 -AT- gmail -DOT- com. Thanks, and enjoy. // AjS
56minus1 UPDATE:
I found some information about Sean from this recent Metro Times post. Seems he is still making music, but now with a band called . Below is a video for 800Beloved’s song Go, from an album released just last month (March 2009) called Bouquet. I bought the album on iTunes, it’s indeed him, his voice is very distinct. 800Beloved has a too. I also found this, a link to a live WDET radio show.
