:: a special thanks to Danwei for helping me learn that this image is actually an Ai Weiwei photograph. I honestly had no idea. For the longest time I thought it was just a Zuo Xiao Zu Zhuo (左小祖咒) album cover, which, incidentally, hung framed on the the wall of my Beijing apartment from 2003 to 2006. Does anyone know where I can find more information about this photo?  // AjS

snaps | beijing telephone booth ::

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

:: taken in Beijing, on West Dawang Rd. close to the Guanghua Rd. intersection. I snapped this photo without much thought, but it has turned out to be one of the best photographs I’ve ever taken. The funny thing is – I took it with my iPhone. With all due respect to an otherwise great device, the iPhone camera is usually a mediocre-at-best camera.  // AjS

snaps | lomo @ random ::

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

:: as mentioned a couple months ago, I’ve been trying my hand at lomography. Below is the result of my continued struggle to make sense of this silly hipster gadget. The slideshow has few good snaps (all luck) taken at the MIDI festival in Zhenjiang and a spattering of other places around Shanghai. Enjoy.  // AjS

brick + chalk stop-action film ::

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

:: a fun stop-action animation video titled WHITE (白) done in a graffiti style on a brick wall with (what appears to be) chalk. Created by Shen Zheng and Yan Dong, students at Jilin’s Academy of Fine Arts and Communications / Media University. Warning: at about the 4-minute mark the video unfortunately goes from “great” to “not really worth watching.” Nevertheless, the front end is well done. Enjoy.  // AjS

things well done | doug kanter photography ::

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

:: I recently had lunch with Beijing-based photographer Doug Kanter, and today I stumbling upon a portrait series he did with an old style 4×5 / large format camera from the 2007 MIDI music festival in Beijing. The photo just below is from that series: on the left is Lin Yun, a 22 year old art student from Guangzhou; on the right is 24 year old Liu Aruhan, with a tattoo of the Chinese character “fen” (traditional form) on his chest, meaning “shit” (as in dung / manure) – both of these photos were taken May 1, 2007. Check out the full series here.

I have shared some more of Doug’s work below too. To see his full portfolio, link here. Bravo, well done.  // AjS

snaps | graffiti @ midi festival ::

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

:: this past weekend I attended the MIDI music festival in Zhenjiang (Jiangsu Province), China. Below is a slideshow of snaps I took of graffiti pieces / tags / throw-ups that lined the inside wall of the venue (just across the street from the west gate of Jiangsu University). These were all painted specifically for the festival (and are probably gone by now), so they are not exactly organic. Nevertheless though, some are quite good. Enjoy.  // AjS

:: this post if for the late Ian Talty, a photographer known best for his graffiti snaps who tragically drown on Sunday. Thanks for all the great photographs.  // AjS

thank you | dezio playing cards ::

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

:: I ran into Shanghai-based graffiti artist DEZIO today at the BLENDER: Digital Culture Festival; he was kind enough to gift me a very cool set of playing cards featuring photographs of his tags and pieces. Many of the pieces are from Shanghai or elsewhere in China, but the set also includes work he’s done around the world, including in France, Croatia, Germany, and other parts of Asia.

A creative, fun way to present one’s credentials. I was most impressed and appreciative. Have a look below. Thank you DEZIO. // AjS
