:: taken at the Shimen Yi Rd. subway station in Shanghai. // AjS
:: taken recently at a market in Shanghai. A shelf full of pigs feet. // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai at the intersection of Huaihai Rd. and Changshu Rd.; a 50-meter hole in the ground, part of the construction site for the city’s Line 7 subway project. Not sure if they are pipes or support beams, perhaps both. // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai at the intersection of Tongren Rd. and Yanan Rd., a Faile sticker spotted on a traffic light. For those who aren’t familiar with Faile, they are a contemporary urban art collective of sorts, founded in Brooklyn, New York. You don’t see their stickers in China much, if at all. To read more about their last stop in Shanghai, link here and here. // XD
:: taken in the small town of Chuzhou in Anhui province, China. I found these to be ingenious advertising efforts. The first photo says, “There is a noodle shop across the way.” The second photo says, “The old Ao De fried chicken shop is across the street.” Sure enough, in both cases, these shops were directly across the alley – less that 10 meters away. I was curious about the necessity and effectiveness of such advertisements, so I took the time to observe pedestrian reactions to them.
Not that these figures represent statistically sound research, but, in 30 minutes (the time it took me to finish my bubble tea), 47 people walked by these two signs (they were right next to each other). Only a few people didn’t notice them, but every person that noticed them looked across the street to confirm what they had just read. 22 of those people people crossed the street and went to one of the two restaurants. Fascinating. // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai, just outside the main entrance to my apartment building. Is someone trying to send me a message? // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai on Jiaozhou Rd. near the Xinzha Rd. intersection. // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai in an alleyway near the intersection of Middle Fuxing Rd. and Baoqing Rd. Maybe I’m the only one, but I quite like the glass chard aesthetic atop brick walls in China. On some level, I think it’s artistic. I’ve seen it done with multi-colored glass and even with bits and pieces of smashed wine bottles. // AjS
:: taken at the home of Shanghai-based illustrator Nial O’Connor while filming part 2 of a video project that introduces characters from his comic Jing Squared (晶²). The first character introduced was Jing Jing, the character below is Xiao Bao. In a couple weeks we’ll be releasing the Xiao Bao video, stay tuned. // AjS
:: taken in Beijing, on West Dawang Rd. close to the Guanghua Rd. intersection. I snapped this photo without much thought, but it has turned out to be one of the best photographs I’ve ever taken. The funny thing is – I took it with my iPhone. With all due respect to an otherwise great device, the iPhone camera is usually a mediocre-at-best camera. // AjS
:: as mentioned a couple months ago, I’ve been trying my hand at lomography. Below is the result of my continued struggle to make sense of this silly hipster gadget. The slideshow has few good snaps (all luck) taken at the MIDI festival in Zhenjiang and a spattering of other places around Shanghai. Enjoy. // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai at the vegetable / meat market (2nd floor) on Wulumuqi Rd. close to the Wuyuan Rd. intersection. The owners of one stand at the market have two small children that spend a lot of time with their parents at work. As a result, the walls of their shop are covered with all sorts of fun, playful ink drawings. I only had time to snap this lone photo, but there are probably hundreds of small characters in dozens of different scenarios dotting the walls. Isn’t it interesting how all the characters in this scenario are looking down to the right? // AjS
