I remember during SARS my brother told me that these facemasks were becoming more fashion statements, rather than disease deterrents. He said the “Hello Kitty” one was quite popular.

Pollution masks as fashion statements are not without precedent. Fashionable masks are hugely popular in Taiwan, primarily for wearing while driving a scooter. Designer helmets (which are required) are as well.
