When I was in China I only recall seeing one tattoo sign in the whole place (near BeiXinQiao metro station Exit D) and while there may have been signs elsewhere, they can’t be that frequent otherwise I would recall it. I also didn’t see anyone walking around with visible tattoos, as far as I can remember.
I’d be interested to know how common tattoos are in China..

whoa great photos. Ive heard of Dylan before but had no idea how involved she was, killer presence. and hey light487, When were you last here in China?
the whole idea of tattoos in China isnt new, just another one of those “China things” that surprises foreigners when we find out its been around for “ages” or “Dynasties” or what have you. but in recent years, theres been a strapping surge which seems to coincide with the developing flux of music, even. grip of things go hand in hand, as they should I suppose. and especially in terms of the internet, theres a huge online gathering of fans and forums: check out http://www.xici.net/b733065/board.asp for starters.

I really love TianZunTang (天尊堂刺青) initiated by Du Ze Wu. Award-winning artist, designs are absolutely murder, hes been in so many festivals/conventions and is recognized as a major powerhouse of an artist. (I would have to say, if he vamped up his website/marketing and PR and really utilized his publicity, he could be a mainstream household name not just within the sublet group of tattoo enthusiasts).

Could be wrong here, but ‘Dylan’ probably refers to Zhuo Danting’s Irish boyfriend, unless she’s taken his name as her own. (Which would be totally cute.)

I was there last month but admittedly I was on holidays and while it was more of a China Travel 2.0 / language tourist holiday, I still was only there for 1 month. I guess if I had been there longer, I might seen more of that kind of thing eventually :)

Recently upon traveling to China I did some research on tattoo studios as I thought it would be cool to get a tattoo in every country that I travel to and especially because I liked China so much. I was a bit skeptical on the hygiene issue, because let’s face it, China is not really known for it’s clinical approach to cleanliness. This is why I chose Shanghai seeing as it’s a bit more international and I thought standards would be a bit higher here, how wrong was I ever.
I went to tzt-tattoo.com, and although very good, I feared I might walk away with an infection or something afterward. Not in terms of needles and shit like that, just that the artist kept coughing on the open tattoo whilst working making me cringe every time. Not to mention the open sandwich on the table that got a bit taken out of it almost after every cough.
I was seriously unimpressed and don’t think I’ll visit another tattoo shop – even though Ting up there looks EXCELLENT, I doubt I’ll take the chance.
