:: taken in Pudong, Shanghai with my iPhone while I was waiting at a red light. The Shanghai Financial Center and the Jin Mao Tower – my two favorite buildings in Asia. // AjS
:: Apple is apparently opening a second official store in Beijing, near the Qianmen area. Ben Wood, the Shanghai-based architect of Xintiandi-fame, and his Shanghai Studio design firm are behind the project. Link here for more. Uh, when can we get an official Apple store in Shanghai. Pretty please? // AjS
:: taken in Shanghai in an alleyway near the intersection of Middle Fuxing Rd. and Baoqing Rd. Maybe I’m the only one, but I quite like the glass chard aesthetic atop brick walls in China. On some level, I think it’s artistic. I’ve seen it done with multi-colored glass and even with bits and pieces of smashed wine bottles. // AjS
:: I noticed these protest banners on my way into work this morning. I wonder how long they will stay there. The photos below were taken in Shanghai at the intersection of Middle Huaihai Rd. and Huating Rd. The first one says: 上交响迁建严重扰民破坏和谐, meaning “The relocation of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to a new building seriously disturbs the people and is destroying (social) harmony.” The second one says: 上交响不要论为破坏历史建筑的罪人, meaning “The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra should not turn into criminals against historical architecture.” Does anyone know why the authors used the word “论为” instead of “沦为,” or is it just an honest typo? I like how protest banners in China are black on white. // AjS
:: I came across this picture on Dianping.com, a “jiong” (囧) house in Chongqing, apparently just outside Chongqing #11 Middle School. Neat. // AjS
:: a short original film titled Townway by Neocha.com-user AE (aka Yufei). In describing the film, Yufei says, “Beijing is the world’s most mysterious and mystical city. Leaving from Sihui station on the line 8 subway, pay close attention and you can see Beijing’s unusual beauty subtly emerge; however, this is something rare that you can’t experience every time.” // AjS
